Each purchase comes with an ideal sized candle to get you started.  Note that candles will light the luminary best when they are shorter than the luminary.
 
To enjoy the translucency without a candle- experiment with where this luminary captures the light best in your home.  Any place that has a strong light source will work well, especially a natural light source.  
 
This porcelain luminary is handmade from begninng to end.  I throw these on the pottery wheel, then they are trimmed to even thickness.  Each one is carved by hand for a one-of-a-kind pattern and shape.  Artist page for more.
